Little Books Part 2 - DIY Washi Tape by Shells in the Bush

Part 2 of Michelle's book series...

Enjoy!!

Hi everyone!!

I'm Michelle Reynolds from www.shellsinthebush.com/ and the Cre8ive Klatch Team.
I'm here today to show you how to make washi tape for your Little Books and to inspire you to create your own.

Part 1 will show you how to make different backgrounds and pages for your book.

Part 2 will give you some tips to make your own washi tape.

Part 3 we will be binding the book together - no needles required!!!

Supplies

~ Double sided tape - 18mm/0.7 inches wide
~ Paper - use very thin paper as the tape will be folded over and this is much easier to do with thin paper.  (I once tried to use vellum but it was too thick and did not fold over.)

I'm in Australia and I love to use greaseproof paper - it is $2/roll, thin and soaks up the paint on the gelli plate. If you are in USA or elsewhere then I suggest tissue paper or deli paper or if you have another suggestion then leave a comment below.  Thanks.

~ Ink Sprays
~ Gelli plate and acrylic paint, brayer
~ Stamps and ink pad

1. Decorate your paper.

I only have 3 inks and spray them onto the paper inside a cardboard box so I don't get ink everywhere. I need to be careful not to mix the inks altogether to get brown.

I always have greaseproof paper around when I'm using the gelli plate as it's great to make texture, it sucks up paint and therefore cleans the plate up nicely and I put it next to the plate to roll off any excess paint from the brayer.

2. Stamps add a bit more interest to your paper:

3. Before adding the double sided tape cut the paper to desired lengths adding a little bit extra - 10cm/4" and 20cm/8" are required for the book. Stick the tape to the back of the paper.

4. Then cut the tape into strips. See first photo.

5. Optional - I like to do this as it adds colour and interest to the pages - add washi tape to the 3 out of the 4 sides of your page - stick half a strip on one side edge and the other half to other side, the back side.

My next tutorial will show you how to bind your book pages together with washi tape - you will need more washi tape.... :D

I hope you have fun creating your washi tape for the pages of your book.  Please join our Cre8ive Klatch FaceBook Group and share your creations - I would be thrilled to see them and I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you.

Michelle.

Holiday Shadowbox Project by Linda Kay's Art

I love holiday cards! Sending them, receiving them, but most of all, upcycling them into wonderful projects. They come in so many designs, sentiments and colors, it seems appropriate to make them last a bit longer. I enjoy making shadowboxes out of them and I wanted to share my process with you today. I hope you enjoy creating one too!

To make this project you will need to gather a few supplies:
A good premade shadowbox or sturdy box or frame that will let you build layers, the size should not be too big for the images you use. A glass front is a nice thing to include.

Supplies:
  • An assortment of holiday cards,
  • stickers,
  • glitter,
  • glues, (I used Tacky, Modge Podge & hot glue),
  • transparent tape,
  • embelishments,
  • fuzzy yarns & fibers,
  • holiday charms,
  • any item that you feel fits your theme.
  • Window cleaner
  •  paper towels.

Optional supplies:
  • cord and eye pins for making a hanger.

Tools you will need:
  • Good sharp scissors,
  • hot glue gun,
  • bone folder or popscicle stick,
  • ruler,
  • pencil.

Optional tools:
  • glitter catch tray,
  • non-stick crafting sheet.

Choose your images with similar themes & colors. Play around with possible layouts that enhance each other. Your focus point should be your very top layer, so choose items that go well behind it. Cut these out very carefully with very sharp scissors. Do a dry fit before commiting with glues. Use your ruler to double check sizes before your final cuts are made.

If your shadowbox has a glass cover, be sure to clean this very well before you begin, inside and outside. I found that spraying the glass cleaner onto your paper towel is much better than spraying the glass.

I have an assortment of glitters that I like to use. I found that vintage colors look best and give an aged appearance to my finished project. You can use any you really like. I also like the fine and ultra fine grades of glitter as it looks more size appropriate to the images.

I like to use a glitter catch tray when I am working with glitters. It helps to reduce waste and makes clean up a whole lot easier. I also use a very fluffy paint brush to coax the glitter back into its container. Choose areas that you want to highlight with glitter and dab bits of tacky glue sparingly on these areas. Good places to choose are snowcovered tree branches, tops of buildings, tops of snow banks, moon light on surfaces, etc. Cover the glue with plenty of glitter, let it sit for a moment, then gently shake excess glitter into the catch tray. Set aside to dry. If you don't have a catch tray, a sheet of waxed paper works well too. Return extra glitter back into it's container before starting another color or glitter size.

Now you can glue your back layer into your shadowbox. I used a thin layer of Modge Podge on the back of the shadowbox and placed my background layer in, smoothing out wrinkles from the center to the outer edges. Be careful around the glittered areas so that you don't knock it off. My bone folder was helpful in getting many of the wrinkles smoothed out. Try to get as smooth as you can. A few wrinkles as I have here, do not matter too much. Just be patient and keep working on it with gentle strokes, as it takes a while to dry and this alows you some working time

.

Now the real fun for me begins! Embellishments are my favorite part. I can customize and add details till my heart is content. I found some translucent stickers that I could use on all my surfaces including the glass cover. This allowed me to add dimentions without adding much weight or bulk and being able to add it to the glass was a real plus. I used smaller stickers on the background and larger stickers on the front to add a sense of dimension.

I did a dry test run with my Santa layer to be sure there were enough snowflakes spread all around. I also played with some plastic dimentional snowflakes and some embellished snowflake stickers that had little gems on them. Use as much or as little as you like. For me, the more, the merrier!!

After all my embelishements were in place, I twisted some eyelash yarn with a thin silver thread and used my hot glue gun to attach it on the inside of the shadowbox frame along the box edges. This is good for covering up areas that don't quite fit or lie flat. It helpes detract from some of the wrinkles too! Small dabs of glue are all that is necceary and the bone folder is helpful to push the fibers into the hot glue and save your little finger tips.

To add a little movement to my shadowbox, I tied silver strings to some of the plastic snowflakes and hot glued them to the top of the inside of the shadowbox. Again the bone folder came in handy.

Look your shadowbox over and trim away any stray glue strings, fly away fibers and shake out excess glitter that has fallen loose.

My shadowbox had 2 small brackets for holding the glass into place. These came in handy for my top Santa layer. I carefully loosened the bracket, slipped in Santa against the glass and tightened the bracket again. A few small strips of tape along the sides of the Santa cutout hold him still and in place. Close the cover and check all is holding well in place.

The last step is to embellish the front cover of your shadowbox. I used some German Scrap papers to line the frame top, bottom and sides. Any gaps were filed in with the embelished snowflake stickers. A bit of glitter glue was run on both sides of the frame embelishments for that added touch. Let these all dry well.

My shadowboxes have an easel back stand that makes displaying it easy. You can also choose to make a hanger with some cording and small eye pin screws. Simply decide where to place your eye pins on the right and left sides of the shadowbox, use a pin to start the hole and screw them in. Tie your cord onto each pin leaving enough room for the shadowbox to hang on the wall or on your tree comfortably.

Santa Arrives

Here are a few of my shadowboxes that I've made recently. I have used cigar boxes, papermachet boxes and covers and drawers from doll house dressers. Use your imagination and come up with something creative and upcycled.

Little Books Part 1 By Shells in the Bush

Now you're in for a real treat!

This project will make you want to get started right now!!

Hi everyone!!
I'm Michelle Reynolds from www.shellsinthebush.com/ and the Cre8ive Klatch Team.
I'm here today to show you how to make Little Books and to inspire you to create your own.

Part 1 will show you how to make different backgrounds and pages for your book.

Part 2 will give you some tips to make your own washi tape.

Part 3 we will be binding the book together - no needles required!!!

Supplies - will vary depending what you use to create your pages.

~ Index Cards or cardstock cut into 8" x 4" = 20cm x 10cm rectangles

1. Index cards which have been gelli printed and brayered - using the left over paint not needed on the gelli plate.

2. Index cards which have been sprayed with ink spray, you could place a stencil or mask on top first. From here you could stamp them, collage on them, leave them as is for journaling on or writing poetry or quotes.

3.  If you have any punches then create some cut outs and glue them to the index cards. I decorated the hexagonals with a bee which is a free printable I found on Pinterest.

4. Glue paper napkins to index cards then add ephemera to make a picture. The ladies are free printables I found on Pinterest. Download them and put them onto a Word Document or Pages in Mac, you can them determine their size - I made mine 5-6 inches which leaves an inch above and below. I also added some lace and small doilies.

5. Glue book pages to index cards then decorate.  Use vintage books or old dictionary pages. Decorate with paint, gesso, stamps, gel pens or washi tape.

Check out second hand book stores, garage sales, op shops or fairs for vintage books.

Three of the above pages were given to me in happy mail - where you swap ephemera and bits and pieces with others - postage stamps, punch cut outs, lace, washi tape etc.  I joined a group earlier this year and have participated in many swaps and have three baskets of goodies - these are great to go through when looking for pieces to collage to your cards.

So there are some ideas of what you can do to decorate your pages for your little book. You could also choose a theme or just one way of doing your background too. You may wish to include some blank pages for writing on too if you have decorated both sides of the card.

How many pages? 10 - 15 is good

My next tutorial will show you how to make your own washi tape.

I hope you have fun creating your pages for your book.  Please join our Cre8ive Klatch FaceBook Group and share your creations - I would be thrilled to see them and I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you.

Michelle.

Gr8full Cre8ives In December

Today I'd like to revisit our Gr8full project with a bit of an addition.

December's theme is

celebration.

Which is what we all should be doing this month...right?

For me December is the hardest month to stay focused on what I really need to remember..it's busy, you're running aorund like a chicken with your head cut off, the tree, the decorations, the shopping...ugh!
I'm tired just thinking about it!

How can I remember all the little things that I'm gr8full for?
All the things worth celebrating?
I really want to make an effort this year to keep these things
in the forefront of my thoughts.

Sitting down at the computer the other day I decided to make up a daily list of prompts so I could have a few minutes of reflection.
A few seconds of inner meditation on the celebration of the season.

Here's what I came up with.

Please feel free to print this up and share by
clicking on the picture or on the following link.

Now you can use these just for your personal and daily routine. No one has to see or know. But also I would love it if you would share your thought or pictures with our FB group. Each day has a word and a thought on a photo idea that would be a great addition into Instagram.
(Just remember to use our tags so we can see what incredible things you come up with)
I'm going to try to do each day.
Maybe some to share and some to keep to myself.

I also put together a blank copy so you
can fill in your own gratitude list.

Be cre8ive and fill each day with
something that means something to you.
(you can click the picture or the link below for a printable)

The more gratitude we throw into the universe the better!

Until next time,
